Become a Visiting Fellow

Each year we welcome a broad mix of scholars to be visiting members of the institute’s vibrant research community, fellows are expected to provide a public lecture on their research activities.

Open to All Disciplines

We welcome applications from all disciplinary backgrounds. With the exception of CIDS faculty, all fellowships are non-stipendiary awards (no cash value). 

Merit-Based Evaluation

Applications are adjudicated by the centre's Program Committee based on the academic merit of the proposal, the views of the referees and the recent scholarly activity of the candidate.

Visiting research fellows

Collision Institute of Development Studies (CIDS) welcomes applications from scholars in Nigeria and abroad for a visiting research fellowship. Fellows typically stay between two to twelve months; however, the institute will consider requests for terms of any length, as approval is conditional on space availability in a given year.

Application deadline

Ongoing, though we prefer to assess applications in late October and mid-March.

Purpose

To provide research space and an environment conducive to writing and reflection to scholars working on research projects related to Development, Foreign Policy, Security, Public Health, Public Policy and International Affairs

Eligibility

Nigerian and international scholars; emeritus scholars; new scholars; scholars on sabbatical leave from their regular academic appointments.

Fellows will have access to the internet, scanner, and photocopier services, and opportunities to participate in all CISD social and academic activities.

Successful applicants must secure their own research funding to cover all accrued expenses

Conditions

Visiting research fellows are expected to be willing to give a public lecture on a theme in the area of their research (time and space permitting), to take advantage of the work station provided in the centre, and attend the regular activities of the CISD (e.g., daily informal meetings over coffee, weekly public lectures of other fellows). Fellows do not need to participate in all events but are encouraged to participate in the institute’s thriving academic and social life. 

Application Procedure

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis via email and should include:

  • a current CV;
  • a letter of intent;
  • two PDF letters of support sent directly to the CIDS at fellows@cidstudies.com
  • The centre may also solicit the opinions of other referees.
